I have wandered through European fashion houses alone since my twenties, learning and practicing clothing making from men’s jackets to women’s dresses. Along the way, I encountered couture.
Couture refers to the precious craftsmanship mastered by few skilled artisans worldwide, as well as the act of tailoring clothes using such techniques. What I learned is that couture is crafted, gathering the culture of the region from materials to handicrafts. Continuing couture is connected to preserving the culture of the region and the artisans who uphold it.
Meanwhile, despite the diverse regional cultures in Japan, I feel that the fashion industry, driven by economic rationality, has become inundated with ready-made products, leading to the near absence of the ability to create haute couture.
I believe in creating couture unique to Japan and the East, for the people shaping the future and to pass down Japan’s diverse regional cultures to the next generation.
